Op-Ed: Distance learning a reminder that education is all about connections

Last June, at my Nordhoff graduation, I spoke a bit about public education in our technology-ridden world. I concluded that, perhaps counterintuitively, what made my Ojai education so special wasn’t necessarily the information. If we think about information in its barest sense, we have all the information in the world at our fingertips — in our cell phones and computers. Rather, what made my education so valuable (what made me want to go to school) was the ability to connect with my fellow students and, especially, my teachers. In my view, the connections one makes while absorbing and being exposed to new information are what make a formal education particularly worthwhile.
