Charges dropped against second medical cannabis defendant

Nearly a year and a half after his April 14, 2016 arrest, misdemeanor cannabis possession charges against former Shangri-La Care Cooperative (SLCC) delivery driver William MacNeil were dismissed in Ventura County Superior Court Sept. 25.
“We, as the prosecution, made the motion to dismiss,” said Ventura County Deputy District Attorney Erin Meister.
According to court records, the prosecution moved to dismiss the case because they were not able to prove the charges against MacNeil beyond a reasonable doubt.
The news came as a relief to MacNeil.
“It was a huge amount of stress. The minute (my lawyer) called me and gave me the news, I felt it lift off of me,” he said.
Still, the 17 months of uncertainly took a toll, MacNeil said.
“I'm still looking over my shoulder every time I see a police car,” he acknowledged. And he's still struggling to remove his mugshot from Google Images.
MacNeil was arrested on the same day as SLCC's co-founders Jeff Kroll and Robert Hoffman.
