Bangser urges OUSD to look at moving sixth graders to Matilija

At his final meeting as superintendent June 27, Ojai Unified School District (OUSD) Superintendent Hank Bangser endorsed moving the District’s sixth graders to Matilija Junior High School.
Assistant Superintendent Andy Cantwell will assume the top position after Bangser’s retirement Aug. 17.
“I really do feel strongly about one thing,” said Bangser. “This school district should have grades six through eight in one school. Unequivocally. No doubt about it.”
With a middle school that serves only seventh and eighth graders, OUSD is an outlier.
“There are more than 10,000 public schools in the state of California and I believe only five are grade seven through eight junior high schools. In Ventura County, the norm is to have sixth through eighth grade middle school configurations,” said Cantwell.
The District discussed the idea of moving OUSD’s sixth graders to Matilija during 2014 deliberations.
