Local swim teams look to make a big splash

More Ojai high school students participate in interscholastic sports during the spring season than at any time of the year. At Nordhoff and Villanova, swimming remains one of the most popular and most successful of the spring sports.

This year should be no different, according to Nordhoff head coach Rene Nakao-Mauch and Villanova head coach Jermaine Britton, each of whom were elite swimmers themselves before picking up a whistle.

Nakao-Mauch, in her 27th year on the Nordhoff pool deck, has a somewhat smaller (but equally talented) squad than in past years. “Everybody has to swim four events for us (the maximum allowed),” said Nakao-Mauch, who is assisted by husband and fellow NHS teacher Jim Mauch, fellow NHS math teacher Kendall Neely and former NHS swimmer Chandler Thomas. “We have a couple of really talented swimmers, but depth will definitely be key.”
