Suspect arrested in recent acetylene bomb explosion

Friday, Ojai police arrested 24-year-old Travis Ross, an Ojai resident they suspect is responsible for the explosion heard throughout Meiners Oaks Jan. 27 around 7:30 p.m. Deputies from the Ojai police station, along with Ventura County Fire Department personnel, responded to the area of N. La Luna Avenue and Fairview Road. The Sheriff’s dispatch had received numerous calls of a loud explosion in the area.

According to the Ventura County Sheriffs Office (VCSO), patrol deputies at the scene received information that the explosions were possibly coming from a home on N. La Luna; however, they were unable to locate the person responsible or any evidence to confirm the explosion. Ojai station detectives took over the investigation and identified Ross as the suspect in this case. Their investigation revealed that Ross has allegedly been building and detonating small bombs by filling plastic bags with a mixture of oxygen and propane. Once the bags were filled and sealed, a lighter or match was used to light a slow burning fuse, VCSO officials said. Last summer, there were several similar incidents reported to the Ojai Police Department that went unsolved.
At this time, it is unknown if Ross was involved with those explosions. Ross was arrested and booked into the Ventura County Main Jail on suspicion of making and detonating an explosive device. His bail was set at $100,000.
