Bella (Jessi May Stevenson of Ojai), left, is yearning to be independent from her mother. She has met a movie theater usher she believes wants to marry her and hopes their plans to start a restaurant will engender that freedom. All she needs is $5,000. When her mother, Mrs. Kurnitz (Isobel Roth of Ojai), discovers her with this money, she assumes Bella has stolen it from her personal stash, which leads to this confrontation. (In reality, Bella has been given the money by her brother, Louie.)
