Freeman captures Pixieland

Ojai Studio Artist Valerie Freeman’s new location for this Second Saturday free Ojai Studio Artists mini-tour is at FireStick Pottery Studio on June 8 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Freeman will be showcasing several new series of her luster ceramics inspired from spring in Ojai and Japan.
Whimsical experimentation with organic movement and expression is the core of Freeman's paintings and ceramics. Her palette and gestures are inspired by nature and her worldly travels, including her recent visit to Hakone, Japan, with a winter wonderland snow on cherry blossoms and snowing cherry blossom petals in Tokyo.
Upon arriving home to “Pixieland” — Ojai — she visited Beatrice Wood Center for the Arts and was fascinated by the temporary dappled clay dwellings of the busy nesting swallows that adorn the eaves of the center. Freeman’s translation of the beaded textured structures has become something quite unique in itself, “Ojai Geodes.” Her brilliant luster glazes are gems, nested in shimmering jewel like textured bowls and contrasted with Thomas Fire earthen-blackened ash exteriors.
The OSA tour June 8 features several OSA artists’ studios on the East End of town and you can expect to see Freeman’s new luster Pixie & Geode treasures along with her gestural ceramic luster animals and Neanderthal stoneware bowls adorned with long horn cattle and goats. Firestick Pottery is located at 1804 E. Ojai Ave., from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Her works are also included in Ojai downtown Arcade at the new Brittany Davis Gallery with an opening reception June 8 from 4 to 6 p.m.
