OUSD superintendent explains school fall reopening plans

6 26 LOGOOjai Unified School District Superintendent Tiffany Morse explained school fall reopening plans, as discussed by the Board of Education on Wednesday.
On June 26, she sent an email to OUSD families describing current plans, along with website links for more information, for district forms and for meeting signups.

She wrote:

"Dear Families,

"I hope you are enjoying your summer so far!

"We have been hard at work preparing for our return to school in the fall. We know that our students are the heart and future of the community and we want to both keep everyone safe and healthy and provide the best educational experience possible. While we don't have all of the answers, we want to share with you what we have so far so that you can begin your planning and preparation. I apologize in advance for the long message, however, we want to be sure you have as much information as possible. Anything in red is a link you can click to find more information.

"You can find the proposed bell schedule for each school below:

Elementary Grades — English
Elementary Grades_Spanish
Matilija — English
Matilija — Spanish
Nordhoff Schedule — English
Nordhoff Schedule — Spanish

"Here are a few key things we also want to share with you:

"The times of the bell schedule are not final, and will likely change based upon our ability to provide transportation. 

"We are still working on the logistics for TK/Kindergarten and 1st grade. 

"We will determine which A/B day schedule your child will be on by splitting the student population at each school in half. Our first priority is to put siblings on the same schedule at all sites. Next, we will attempt to accommodate requests to change to a different day. You can fill out the request form at:

  

"If you would like homeschool or full distance learning options next year rather than return to campus, we have options to do so. You can view our options at:

"If you would like to register for distance learning next year, please fill out the form below:

Elementary:
Secondary (Middle School/High School):

"There are still many components that we are working on for next year, and we hope to have more for you on these services as soon as possible. Work in progress includes: 

"— Transportation 
"— Child Care for Elementary School students during distance learning days
"— Special Education services

"We are also working on a Return to Athletics plan for High School sports. We have not yet heard from CIF about final plans for next year, but we believe there will be a statement released on July 20th. However, we want students in fall sports to be able to begin practice and conditioning. 

"Here is our Return to Practice Plan:

"We will have a Zoom meeting for athletics parents on July 1 at 6 p.m.  Mr. Monson will send out specific details later to provide parent access to the meeting."

"Finally, if you would like to join a Town Hall session with me to ask questions, we have scheduled several sessions, including one in Spanish. You can sign up at:

"We will also be scheduling town hall meetings for high school students in the next couple of weeks. 

"Thank you for your patience as we navigate this very new territory. As you can imagine, the logistics are daunting, and every school district in the state is working to find the best solutions for students in the fall while keeping kids and staff safe. I try and keep this advice from writer Anne Lamott in mind as we work each day on our plan:

"'Thirty years ago my older brother, who was ten years old at the time, was trying to get a report on birds written that he'd had three months to write. It was due the next day. We were out at our family cabin in Bolinas, and he was at the kitchen table close to tears, surrounded by binder paper and pencils and unopened books on birds, immobilized by the hugeness of the task ahead. Then my father sat down beside him, put his arm around my brother's shoulder, and said. 'Bird by bird, buddy. Just take it bird by bird.'"

 

SPORTS information was sent out Friday from Nordhoff High School:

Parents with students who plan to participate in Nordhoff sports can begin the Athletic Clearance process by making an appointment with a primary-care physicians to get a sports physical, and by completing the online registration through: 

Nordhoff will not be hosting the Physicals Fundraiser this year.

OUSD is requesting that the parents or doctor’s office fax the physical form to the OUSD office at 805-640-4336 or email it as a pdf attachment to:

Once the physical and online information has been verified, the student will be cleared for sports participation.
