Vons in Ojai was briefly evacuated Friday afternoon after an apparent equipment malfunction.
The incident, reported at 1 p.m., involved a hot-cold display where rotisserie chicken, salads and other food items are kept.
Store employees reported a popping sound followed by an odor coming from the unit, Capt. Tony McHale of the Ventura County Fire Department told the Ojai Valley News on scene.
Vons personnel safely cleared the store of customers and employees, who waited outside at the front of the business while firefighters investigated.
The malfunction and odor may have been electrical or freon-related in origin, McHale said.
Firefighters gave the all-clear at around 1:20 p.m., and customers and workers were allowed back in the store.
No one was hurt, McHale said.
