Ojai’s Third Friday, April 19, is everyone’s chance to chat with talented artists about their work and the techniques that excite them. The event from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. will include Ojai Valley Artists’ Gallery, Human Arts Gallery, and the Ojai Valley Museum as well as restaurants and shops in and around the Ojai Arcade.
This monthly free event features light refreshments and live music at many venues. OVA Gallery will highlight the work of fiber artist Borbala Arvai, painter Nancy Horwick and Jeweler Gayle Minjarez. Sus Corez will serenade with her mellow guitar.
Arvai’s felt creations are not only works of art, but each figure is ripe for forging your own story. Whether it is an adorable farmyard animal, an enchanting forest animal, or a magical mystical creature, adults and children alike will be captivated by her entirely handmade sculptures. Made from wool, natural, and found recycled materials she has been created smiles her needle felting since 2007.
Horwick observes and paints the world around her and is strongly influenced by the 19th century painters of both Europe s and the Americas. She often envelopes her subjects in a soft glow whether from nature, as in her portrayal of a tranquil afternoon on the water, or bathed in lamplight in a cozy cafe scene. Each painting makes an emotional connection.
Minjarez work is a fascinating combination of metals, shapes, and textures hand-wrought with expert attention to detail. She hand-dyes and manipulates her materials to such an extent that each individual portion of a piece becomes a unique abstract painting on metal. It’s like wearing a gallery on your wrist.
Find out more about these three talented artists at OVA Gallery at 238 E. Ojai Ave.
