Ojai kicks off annual Earth Day celebration at Libbey Park on April 20

Austin Widger, Ojai Valley News reporter
Earth Day is taking place for the 49th time April 22, and to celebrate in the Ojai Valley, a celebration is being held April 20 at Libbey Park from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The first official Earth Day was celebrated on the first day of spring on March 21, 1970. However, the disastrous oil spill in the Santa Barbara Channel was really a trigger for Earth Day as we know it.
This day was proposed by U.S. Sen. Gaylord Nelson, around the first anniversary of the Jan. 28, 1969 spill. Thus, a second Earth Day, and the one we celebrate to this day, took place April 22, 1970.
Ojai’s Libbey Park celebration will again be hosted by the Ojai Valley Green Coalition and will include exhibits, performances vendors and more.
People are encouraged to walk and bike to the event, in a show of an emission-free transportation day. Electric vehicles will be showcased, as well as cob-building demonstrations.
On stage, there will be a musical performance each hour from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Various presentations will be made by people, including Mayor Johnny Johnston, Councilwoman Suza Francina, Brian Stark of the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy, Jeff Kuyper of Los Padres ForestWatch, Robin Gerber of CFROG and more.
Many interactive movement, art and kids activities will be going on throughout the day too.
The event is completely free and will take place at 269 E. Ojai Ave., Ojai. For more information, view the Earth Day Program at www.ojaivalleynews.com or visit www.ojaiearthday.org.
