Trevor Quirk earns stripes as Upper Ojai folk hero for heroic acts during fires and mudslides

Trevor Quirk, 42, was 2018’s youngest Ojai Living Treasure, nominated for his heroic work helping save lives, homes and treasures during the Thomas Fire and then afterward starting Upper Ojai Relief to help people recover.
When the Thomas Fire started in Upper Ojai on December 4, 2017, Quirk’s home on Sulphur Mountain Road was surrounded by flames. “I decided to stay home and defend my property. I evacuated my wife and my kids,” Quirk said. He told them he was going to follow them down the hill, but ended up staying behind to help fleeing residents and to help save his home and his neighbors’ homes.
He began fighting the fire and cutting fire lines with his 93-year-old neighbor to stop its forward progress. Quirk had some training fighting fires in college. “(It was) gratuitous, man, like in the right place at the right time,”he said. “Who would’ve thought that that experience I had 20 years ago would pay off?”
