Four candidates for two elected law enforcement positions will discuss social and racial justice issues in the work those two positions perform at an upcoming forum at 6-8 p.m., on Wednesday, May 4.
Incumbent Ventura County Sheriff Bill Ayub and candidate VCSO Commander James Fryhoff are both running for the seat of Ventura County Sheriff and will take questions during the forum’s first hour, from 6-7 p.m., moderated by Perry Martin, Jr., a professor of business at Moorpark College and former executive director of the Oxnard-based Community Advocacy Coalition.

Six applicants will be interviewed this week as the Board of Directors of Meiners Oaks Water District selects a resident of the district to fill an open seat on the board.
MOWD will interview three candidates each night on Tuesday, May 3 and Wednesday, May in two virtual Special Meetings.

Ventura County Measures A and B are on the June 7 ballot to affirm the Ventura County Board of Supervisors' decision in 2020 to require all new oil and gas drilling in oil fields in Ventura County, governed by antiquated oil permits, to receive modern-day environmental review. Aera Energy, LLC, has donated $5 million to a political action committee to defeat the measures.

Seconds after he cut the ribbon on new Fire Station 20 in Upper Ojai, 5-year-old Malakai Morris gets a high five from Andy VanSciver, public information officer with the Ventura County Fire Department. The new $7.3 million fire station replaces the original station built in 1959 and will better accommodate firefighters and additional firefighting equipment. Looking on are local firefighters and dignitaries, including Fire Chief Dustin Gardner, County Supervisors Matt LaVere and Kelly Long, and Ojai Mayor Betsy Stix.

A new team is making baseball dreams come true for kids with special needs.
The Champions/Dodgers, part of Ojai Valley Baseball, played their first game in 2021, giving boys and girls with physical and developmental disabilities the opportunity to bat, field and run the bases.
For kids and parents alike, the team has been nothing short of a miracle.
Oak View's Memorial Day Parade to celebrate our heroes May 30

World War II veteran Carl Greenfield served as Grand Marshal of the 2014 Oak View Memorial Day parade. Enlisting in the U.S. Army on Valentine’s Day, 1940, Greenfield served mainly in the Pacific Theater, earning the Bronze Star for gallantry in action in the Philippines. He passed away in 2018 at the age of 101.

Oak View’s Memorial Day parade is back on May 30, following a two-year break due to the pandemic.
The 15th annual parade, themed “Celebrate Our Heroes,” starts at 10 a.m. at the corner of Old Ventura Avenue and Old Grade Road, and concludes at The Lighthouse Church at 590 Old Ventura Ave.

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, so on April 20, the Daughters of the American Revolution (Mitz-Khan-a-Khan Chapter) partnered with the GFWC Oak View Women's Club and delivered more than $1,000 of craft kits, luggage, and musical instruments to Casa Pacifica Centers for Children and Families, a crisis-care and residential treatment facility for foster or at-risk children in Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties. Students at Valley Oak Charter School in Oak View planted the first round of native plants in the school’s new Tiny Forest on April 21. It is being planted in the Miyawaki Method for afforestation aimed at capturing carbon, moisture and building a forest canopy in spaces without tree cover.

Ojai City Council unanimously approved at its April 26 meeting the first step toward collaborating with Habitat for Humanity Ventura County to develop three affordable housing options for a city-owned parcel on the corner of Montgomery and Franklin streets.
In another action, the council appointed Jeff Rains to a four-year term on the city’s Fiscal Policy Budget Committee.

Meiners Oaks Water District Board of Directors voted unanimously at its April 19 meeting to move ahead with the first step of raising water rates by issuing a public notice of the plan and scheduling a public hearing.
Help Ventura County supervisors pick new seal by May 17

Ventura County’s current seal
St. Junipero Serra was jettisoned from downtown Ventura and he will soon be gone from the county seal.
As a result, the county government is inviting the community to provide input on the county seal redesign.
A survey has been launched for residents to select their preferred design and/or upload their own design at www.ventura.org/seal.

Ojai Valley Museum exhibit shows Ojai at ‘Crossroads’

Ojai Valley Museum will host a reception for its new exhibit, titled “Ojai at the Crossroads: Then & Now,” on Friday, April 29, from 5 to 8 p.m.
The exhibit will be on display until July 10, and an online version of the exhibit can be seen at OjaiValleyMuseum.org. Suggested admission is $5 for adults and $1 for children aged 5 to 18. Masks encouraged.
