VC Office of Education tells Ojai Unified: 'The District may not meet its financial obligations for the current and two subsequent fiscal years'

When Ojai Unified School District Board of Trustees meets Wednesday, May 11, it will discuss an April 21 letter from the Ventura County Office of Education, explaining that its analysis of the school district's second interim report, "indicates the District may not meet its financial obligations for the current and two subsequent fiscal years."

The Ventura County Office of Education has issued a “qualified certification” for the Ojai Unified School District finances and OUSD is required to submit a third interim financial report for operations ending April 30. That report is due June 1.

Mariana Peirano is an expert at building pathways, creating connections and helping people find common ground. She did so for more than 30 years as an elementary school teacher, using art to bridge the gap between immigrant children and the school system. “One of the first things they do away with in public education is the arts. The children crave it, and in elementary school they need it. For a lot of them it’s their only outlet.”

“School district seats have the most immediate and direct impact on the lives of families in any community,” said Blair Braney of Meiners Oaks. She has lived in the Ojai Valley for 32 of her 37 years, leaving only for college. “I was born and raised in Ojai…. As my oldest son entered kindergarten in Ojai Unified — the same school district both my parents and I attended — I got much more interested in the school district and its workings.”

Bonnie Patton grew up both in Ojai and with Ojai. Her parents, Chuck Bushman and Patricia Bushman-Nelles, were key figures in the founding of the Ojai Independence Day Committee. Her father was chairman up until the last year of his life in 1979.

When River Sauvageau arrived in Ojai in April 1978, she knew she had found a place of true vocational awakening. “What has been really helpful for me, and what attracted me here in the first place, was community,” she said. “There’s an openness here that I wasn’t finding in other places. There’s a strong spirit of cooperation and mutuality and reciprocation,” she said.

Ventura County voters on June 7 will decide what appears to be the costliest local ballot measure battle in its electoral history, more than doubling the previous record. Already the county’s biggest oil producer, Aera Energy has, over the last two years, donated $6.5 million to a “Stop Measures A and B” coalition.

Due to an appeal to the Ojai City Council, filed by a member of the public with an organization called Simply Ojai, the four property owners applying to open Hotel El Roblar at 122 E. Ojai Ave. will present their proposal to the council on May 10 for a final thumbs up or down.
