Former Nordhoff Ranger finishes third in Scottish Open

Last week, former Nordhoff High School golf star Beth Allen finished third in the Ladies European Tour (LET) Scottish Open event. Allen made a late push and finished 9 under par for the tournament, just two shots off the eventual champion Isabelle Boineu. This week, Allen is playing in the LET British Open. So far this season, Allen leads the tour in winnings. Through eight events, Allen has collected $109,426.

Ojai’s Troy Rutherford climbed from sixth-starting position to victory Saturday in the USAC West Coast Sprint Car’s Peter Murphy Classic at Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare.

It was Rutherford’s third victory of the season in high-caliber USAC-sanctioned events. He won a West Coast feature at Bakersfield Speedway March 19



Brinkhoff selected to head tennis program at OVAC

The Ojai Valley Athletic Club (OVAC) has hired Thomas Brinkhoff as its tennis director.

The 45-year-old Brinkhoff has a résumé that includes coaching Sam Queery, one of the top Americans on the Association of Tennis Professionals



Settem up for success: New coach takes over VPS water sports program

Villanova Preperatory School athletic director Ricardo Olivares recently announced the hiring of Tim Settem, who will take over the school’s water polo and swimming programs. Additionally, Settem will serve as a health teacher beginning this fall.

Chiefs still top Sundowner League standings

The Sundowner Golf League met at Soule Park Golf Course Tuesday for the 13th week of play. The playoffs are fast approaching and players are starting to find their groove.

Scores as a whole were much higher than normal this week. Teams averaged more than 60 points on the week, which is more than five points



Top Sundowner Golf League teams gear up for final push

The Sundowner Golf League reached the three-quarter mark Tuesday at Soule Park Golf Course. The playoffs are approaching and teams are jockeying for position entering the home stretch of the season.

Shut the Putt Up continued their hot play of late by scoring a league-high 62 points on the day. They were led by Trevor Leal's gross 37 for 22 points. They also saw Rick Dowden and Brock Taylor each score 20 points to support Leal's effort. The team now leads the second half of the season by a three-point margin


Basketball players from three schools join forces for summer

High school girls’ basketball players from three schools in the Ojai Valley joined forces this summer to represent Team Ojai at the Santa Paula Summer Basketball League.

Team Ojai went 2-4 in the six-week league, defeating Fillmore and www.gorarocka.si Carpinteria while falling to Simi Valley, Channel Islands, Royal and Santa Paula, the latter by just three points in a game in which Ojai had just five girls in uniform.


Ojai Valley School helps riders hone their skills

Sarah Cline, an 11 year-old from San Diego, focuses on navigating a jump with her horse at Ojai Valley School’s upper campus Wednesday at the school's equestrian summer camp. The camp, which offers intensive instruction from 8 a.m. to noon daily, gives students the opportunity to ride two horses each morning and to hone their skills in jumping and dressage.

Cash Kenton headed to U.S. Open

Ojai’s Cash “Money” Kenton is one of 12 youth skateboarders to be invited to the U.S. Open that begins Sunday in Huntington Beach. The U.S. Open offers skateboarding, BMX and surfing competitions and will feature some of the best athletes in the world. Visit www.vansusopenofsurfing.com to follow Kenton’s progress in the event.
