Newest Ojai swimmers learn the basics

Gridirion Club golf event raises much-needed funding for Nordhoff

The Nordhoff Ranger Gridiron Club played host to 72 golfers last Sunday at the club’s annual golf fundraising event. According to tournament organizer and assistant coach Don Rodarte, the team led by local business owners and Nordhoff supporters, Dave Skaggs and Steve Perry, won the tournament in a cart off. “We raised a good amount of money, which will really help our program,” said Rodarte.

McClung notches first Front Nine victory

07222014 ladies Shirley McClung Shirley McClung recently won the Front Nine mini-tournament at Soule Park. Ronnie Rodriguez came in second, and Mitnee Duque finished third. McClung’s new driver made the difference as she claimed her first Front Nine victory. For longest drive, Debra Main hit her shot 188 yards on the fourth hole, while Peggy Brown drove hers 167 yards. The fewest putts contest went to Carole Borland and Susan Edge with 16 each. The low gross of the day went to Duque with a 47. (photo submitted)

Villanova offering volleyball camp

Villanova Prep will be hosting a Volleyball Camp from July 28 to July 31 from 10 a.m. to noon.
The camp is intended for girls, and for the first time, boys, entering sixth through eighth grades. The cost will be $80 per player and any additional siblings will only be $40.

Over the years, the Nordhoff football program has enjoyed a long line of great offensive linemen. With the 2014 season approaching, the Rangers will once again be powered by a solid group up front. This season, Nordhoff welcomes back two starters from last year’s unit in Ivan Jauregui and Jesus Hernandez.

Chiefs IE remain on top of Sundowners

The Sundowners’ season reached the three-quarter mark this past Tuesday at the Soule Park Golf Course. The back nine has proven to be much more difficult for the league this year, and the league as a whole put up lower point totals than average. The race to the playoffs and second half awards will heat up over the next four weeks and there figures to be quite a bit of movement among the top teams.

Ranger Gridiron Club hosting golf tournament Sunday

The annual fundraiser is held to help raise funds for football equipment and transportation. Entry fees are $115 per golfer and all proceeds go to the Gridiron Club. The Soule Park Senior Men’s Club met July 7 at the Soule Park Golf Course and held an Individual low net Nassau event. In the Nassau tournament, the player winning the front nine takes top honors, the player winning the back nine is recognized, and then the player with the low 18-hole total is also honored.

Ojai Valley youths catch the surfing bug

Maya Mouderres gives a big thumbs up as she catches a wave during her first ever week of surf camp at Solimar Beach in Ventura. The surf camp is offered through the Ojai Recreation Department for four separate weeks this summer under the experienced tutelage of head instructor, Kip Atwater. Wetsuits, surf boards and boogie boards are provided if needed. Mouderres has caught the surfing bug and has been riding the waves nonstop since getting up for the first time. Wildcats end summer with three wins in Carpinteria

The Villanova Prep boys’ basketball team (3-10) finished off their summer season on a high note by winning three games at the Carpinteria Summer Tournament. In their first game, the Wildcats lost to the Dos Pueblos Chargers, 30-21.

First pitch for ORD softball set for August

Bryan brothers to host annual tennis event

Two-time Grand Slam singles champion and former world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka will reunite with winning 2008 French Open mixed doubles partner Bob Bryan this Saturday at the popular V-Grid Tennis Fest presented by Alexander Cadillac and Esurance and featuring Mike and Bob Bryan. The Bryan twins are multi-time champions of the Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament.

Double Duffers announces plans for annual trip

The Double Duffers Golf Club played the monthly tournament a week late, July 10, due to Fourth of July holiday. The tournament, as always, was held at Soule Park Golf Course, and teed off at 8 a.m. The Duffers played a scramble format with 4-person teams and they concluded their event with lunch followed in the clubhouse.
