Houck, senators take on car makers

It’s been almost 10 years since Cally Houck lost her daughters, Jacqueline and Raechel Houck, in a horrific fire and crash caused by a safety defect in a rented Chrysler PT Cruiser. Tuesday, the Ojai mom appeared at a press conference in Sacramento in support of a bill by State Sen. Hannah-Beth Jackson that would require car dealers to inspect and repair used cars for safety defects before sale or loan.

Nordhoff High school was represented by Luke Boyd and Spencer Yates in this year’s Ventura County all-star baseball game, played Sunday afternoon at Conejo Creek Park.

With the start of the 2016 high school football season quickly approaching, the Nordhoff High School (NHS) Rangers are busy with summer passing league and are looking ahead to August when they hit the practice field for two-a-day sessions.

Babcock shines in seniors tourney

The Soule Park Senior Men’s Golf Club held a low-net tournament last week on its home course. After tallying the scorecards, the first flight was won by Roy Rodriguez who shot a 73 on the day. Just behind Rodriguez was Bill Hatch, who came home with a 74, just one stroke off the lead.

Ojai Valley resident Cody Deason continues to live the dream of every college baseball player in the country. Deason and the University of Arizona Wildcats are playing in the College World Series where the city of Omaha has rolled out the red carpet for eight Division 1 college baseball programs.

The Villanova Preparatory School Wildcats boys’ tennis team capped off a successful season by capturing the Frontier League title for the first time in 14 years.

Ojai author helps athletes with mental side of sports

Ojai resident Kamala Nellen has had a multi-faceted life. She began dancing at 8 and continued with it to the professional level in her 20s.

She found time to earn a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from New York University in 1975 and to become a credentialed life coach.

In 1976, Nellen met Swami Muktanda Paramahamsa, founder of the Siddha Yoga spiritual path, and studied with him for17 years in the United States and India.

Nellen put her varied skill sets together in 1996 and begin teaching yoga

Recent Villanova Preparatory School (VPS) graduate Katherine Palmer will join the University of Massachusetts-Lowell (UML) volleyball program starting in the fall. The university recently announced the signing of five new volleyball players and Palmer is on that list.

Palmer was a four-year varsity contributor while playing at VPS and served as a team captain during her junior and senior years. She finished her senior season with a team-high 144

The Nordhoff High School (NHS) boys’ volleyball team enjoyed a successful spring and qualified for the 2016 CIF Southern Section playoffs. NHS went 8-6 in Tri-Valley League action, good enough for a fourth-place finish behind Bishop Diego (13-1), Cate (12-2) and Foothill Tech (10-4).

The Rangers had five players earn all-league honors this season. Headlining the all-league

The Chiefs IE managed to hold the top spot to take the first-half title in the Sundowner golf league. The Chiefs held an 11-point margin heading into the final week of the first half. Ojai Golf Classic raises $15,000

Saturday, the Ojai Golf Classic took place at Soule Park. The golfers were playing to support a local cause.

Probyn honored with lifetime award

Longtime Nordhoff basketball coach Mike Probyn (left) was recently honored by the Ventura County Basketball Coaches Association with a Lifetime Achievement Award. Probyn, who was a member of Nordhoff’s 1967 CIF championship team, went on to coach for the Rangers and has been at it for more than 40 years. After stepping down as varsity head coach in 2012, Probyn has returned to coach the freshmen team at NHS.
