Mistakes and timely big plays by Corona del Mar were too much for the Nordhoff Rangers to overcome in tonight's CIF Regional Championship Bowl game. The Sea Kings intercepted NHS quarterback Tanner Workman two times in the first half, including one that was returned for a touchdown as they rolled to a 24-8 win over the Rangers.
Trailing 10-0 late in the first half, Workman threw to tight end Austin Wolcott who scored with 2 seconds left in the half, but the touchdown was called back due to a holding penalty. Miscues and missed opportunities plagued the Rangers in the second half as well. Despite the solid play of the Ranger defensive unit, the Sea Kings lead grew to 17-0 after three quarters of play.
Trailing 24-0 in the fourth, the Rangers finally got on the board when Workman reconnected with Wolcott for a 4-yard touchdown. Workman then threw to Matt Woodcock for the 2-point conversion. Senior wide out Jake Boyd had a big night as the Rangers were forced to throw most of the game. The Nordhoff running game was unable to get going like they had in recent weeks.
After the game, head coach Tony Henney praised Corona del Mar for forcing the Rangers into some mistakes. The Sea Kings were a very solid team, but the Rangers hung with them with the exception of a couple of plays. "We gave up an interception for a touchdown and had a punt blocked. Those are hard to overcome in a game like this," added Henney.
