Slain deputy remembered with street sign on anniversary of his death

Ojai Chief of Police Dave Kenney unveiled a sign Wednesday during a barbecue in honor of Ojai deputy Peter Aguirre on the 17th anniversary of the slaying.

Aguirre was killed in 1996 when he responded to a domestic violence call in Meiners Oaks. “We are cops and this is a profession,” Kenney said after the ceremony, “but more importantly, we are a family and we wanted to do something more to honor his memory.” Kenney said the officers paid to have the street sign made, and with the permission of the city, had it installed at the entrance to the driveway at the Ojai
