Rescue crews discover the plane truth

Perry Van Houten, Ojai Valley News reporter
Firefighters and a rescue helicopter responded to a report of a plane crash in the Ojai backcountry Sept. 17.
Shortly after 6:15 p.m., a pilot flying in the area of Hines Peak, approximately 17 miles northeast of Ojai, reported seeing the downed aircraft and notified authorities.
According to Capt. Stan Ziegler of the Ventura County Fire Department, fire equipment was sent up Highway 33 into the Los Padres National Forest and staged, while the sheriff's helicopter, Air Squad 9, investigated from the air.
The helicopter crew determined that the airplane spotted was an old crash.
The type of aircraft was not specified, Ziegler said.
According to Capt. Denise Sliva with the Ventura County Sheriff's Office, the plane may have gone down in the 1960s.
