A years-long effort to light up Ojai's skate park has finally raised the $60,000 needed to purchase and install LED lighting to ensure local kids can skate until 10 p.m. each night.
The effort culminated in an April 1 skate deck art show and silent auction at Caravan Outpost.
Local parent Sunday Rylander received a donation of 50 blank skate decks from Goleta-based skateboard shop Skate One and asked local artists to customize them.
The results were shown and auctioned off to benefit the skate park.
“We raised $7,600 in two hours,” said Rylander. “It was insane.”
Chet Hilgers, owner of Caravan Outpost, aims to install the lights by May 1.
Currently, the park closes at sundown each evening.
