A camera at the Robles Fish Passage recorded this image of a young fish heading towards the ocean March 18.

The image of a rainbow trout smolt was recorded March 18 in the Robles Fish Passage on the Ventura River. The fish was caught on video as it swam through the passage at approximately 1 a.m., according to the Casitas Municipal Water District (CMWD) website.
And even though the youngster was swimming backwards, it was steering in the direction of the Pacific Ocean, CMWD General Manager Steve Wickstrum said March 27. “It's significant that after a five-year drought we found one smoltified and heading downstream,” he said.
