It’s that time of the year again.
Pixie season has arrived in the Ojai Valley and it’s one for the record books.
“It is going to be about triple the size of last year’s harvest, which is exciting. Our last big harvest was 2015 – 5 million pounds. We’ll probably harvest over 7 million pounds this year,” said Emily Ayala of Friend’s Ranches.
Ayala confirmed that this year’s harvest represents the Ojai pixie growers’ largest ever.
The large harvest was expected, she said. “There was a lot of planting that happened about a decade ago and the trees are maturing,” Ayala explained.
Though the pixie growers are overjoyed by the large crop, they emphasize that the drought still represents a significant challenge.
