The evening of Dec. 10, under a cloudy sky, The Thacher School held a dedication of its new, research-grade telescope and the school's freshly refurbished observatory.
The eight-month observatory renovation cost $500,000 and included new computing resources, weather equipment, a science camera and a new 27.5-inch PlaneWave CDK-700 telescope that will allow students to gaze into deep space.
“It's an interesting story and it goes back a long ways, about 75 years ago, to a commencement address given at Thacher in June of 1942 by Edwin Hubble,” said Dr. Chris Vyhnal, Thacher's science department chair.
