Volunteers were busy Dec. 6 assembling “care packages” — holiday boxes of items to be sent to men and women deployed from Port Hueneme in the United States Navy. Gathering in Ojai at Ventura County Fire Station 21, the volunteers included members of local Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, along with students from Ojai Valley School, Topa Topa Elementary School, Mira Monte Elementary School, Besant Hill School and San Antonio Elementary School. “Friends from Ventura and Camarillo helped out, too,” said Wendy Tremiti, “and the guys from Fire Station 21, who were amazing.” Tremiti, who has organized the holiday packages for several years now, said this year's send-out will be the largest yet: 124 boxes in all. It costs about $18 to ship a single box, though, and financial help is still needed to get them all headed toward their destinations. Anyone wishing to help out should contact Tremiti at 630-9868.
