The moratorium on new water wells in the Ojai groundwater basin could last a little longer than anticipated. Ventura County Supervisor Steve Bennett said Nov. 30 he will ask the Ventura County Board of Supervisors to extend the proscription on drilling until the public has had a chance to read and digest the operating plan drawn up by the Ojai Basin Groundwater Management Agency (OBGMA).
“This is one of the most important decisions for the valley,” Bennett said Nov. 23. “The public should not have its right to review the document restricted by the OBGMA running behind on getting it finished.”
The existing ban on water well drilling was tentatively set to expire after the OBGMA filed its sustainability plan with the state. The deadline for that filing is Jan. 1.
