Ojai Day attracted as many as 20,000 people downtown Oct. 15, according to event organizer Amber Young. “We had a great turnout,” she said, “it was really lovely.”

The festivities began 9 p.m. Oct. 14 when River Sauvageau and her fellow “Mandala Mavens,” as they call themselves, began the six-hour process of painting the event's annual mandala at Ojai Avenue and Signal Street

This year, a volunteer cellist accompanied the painters, said Sauvageau.

“The cello music was so perfect,” she said, noting that a crowd of nearly 100 joined the artists, “it was our smoothest painting event yet!”

The next day, the mandala artists gathered once again on their freshly-painted artwork, which contained images symbolic of the community's ongoing drought.
