If you want to find out more about the Ventura River Watershed Council (VRWC), Oct. 6 is the date to mark on your calendar. The VRWC's annual evening meeting has been scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. that at the Oak View Community Center, 18 Valley Road in Oak View.
The topic for discussion will be the plan for removing the Matilija Dam, including a progress update from Paul Jenkin, coordinator of the Matilija Coaltion.
Explosives figure prominently in the current course of action for removing the 59-year-old structure on Matilija Creek. The idea is to bore tunnels into — but not all the way through — the base of the dam. Then, the next time the Valley gets enough rain to fill the reservoir behind the dam, engineers will blast the tunnels open. The consequent hydrodynamics will be sufficient, it is believed, to transport a significant portion of the dam's silt downstream and, possibly, out to sea.
Also on the agenda for Oct. 6 will be Darren Kettle, executive director of the Ventura County Transportation Commission, who will speak on local funding opportunities.
There is no charge for admission to the meeting, and the public is invited to attend.
