Play Music on the Porch Day, a worldwide event that encourages music lovers to get together, and well, play, comes to Ojai Aug. 27.
Lisa Casoni of the Porch Gallery will provide the porch. She has invited valley music lovers to gather on the gallery's porch from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday to play, listen and learn.
Casoni orchestrated in event in 2015 as well.
“We're not doing it all day, mostly because of the weather. That was the lesson learned from last year,” she said.
“Throughout history it was common to hear live music on porches, in yards and on street corners. Musicians would regularly surround themselves with friends and family to sing and play music together,” said the Play Music on the Porch Day organization. “This tradition is being lost as more people only experience music as passive entertainment instead of as a participatory celebration of life.”
“Are you kidding, that's perfect!” said Casoni when she first heard of the event.
“It exactly mirrors the way we like to be at the gallery, where it is a participatory place. That's sort of our motto, be involved, participate,” said Casoni. “Your skill level doesn't matter. You can play really well or you can just pick something up.”
Casoni has partnered with Rob Frame of the Ojai Ukulele Orchestra to line up musicians for the event. Each act will play in 15-minute slots, according to Casoni.
The ukulele orchestra will be live on the porch at 6:20 p.m. Aug. 27.
Those who aren't able to attend the event can participate online, by following Play Music on the Porch Day on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
The Porch Gallery is at 310 E. Matilija St. in Ojai.
