The city issued its first four citations for operating illegal short-term rentals this week, with the fines ranging from $3,500 to $11,000 per property.
Violating the city's ban on short-term, or vacation rentals, carries a $500 per day fine. Those who are cited have the right to challenge the city's determination.
John Lyon was one of the four cited. He received a $7,000 citation for renting his three-bedroom, one-bathroom Ojai Avenue property in June. He said he rented his property to three renters in June, for 14 days total, at $200 to $250 per day.
