Two competing open space initiatives will appear on the November ballot in Ventura County.
The Ventura County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously June 21 to place the Sustain VC initiative on the ballot.
Sustain VC’s supporters gathered more than 30,000 petition signatures in support of the initiative, according to Lynn Gray Jensen, executive director of the Ventura County Coalition of Labor Agriculture and Business (COLAB). COLAB assisted in drafting the Sustain VC measure.
SOAR — Save Open Space and Agricultural Resources — became county law in 1998 and expires in 2020. The measure guarantees county residents the right to vote on any development proposal to rezone agricultural land or open space in the unincorporated areas of Ventura County. The SOAR ballot measure would extend those protections until 2050.
The Board of Supervisors voted to add SOAR to the November ballot during their May 3 meeting.
