The weekend weather was cool and inviting, and the June gloom wasn't enough to dampen enthusiasm for music or wine in the Ojai Valley. Turnout for both the 70th Ojai Music Festival and the 30th Ojai Wine Festival was good, officials say, although final attendance figures have not been compiled for either.
“It was hugely successful,” said Gina Gutierrez, chief operating officer for the Ojai Music Festival (OMF). “People seemed to be surprised and pleased by the range of the program.” Organized by music director Peter Sellars, that range included works by Kaija Saariaho, Karla Kilstedt, Du Yun, Pauline Oliveros and Pulitzer Prize winner Carolyn Shaw, as well as the interpretations offered by such virtuosos as Julia Bullock, Aruna Sairam, Leila Adu, Dina El Wedidi and the International Contemporary Ensemble. “It was a very deep, soulful festival,” Gutierrez said.
