Five acres of The Thacher School gained the approval of the National Wildlife Federation (NWF) last week as a certified wildlife habitat in keeping with its Garden for Wildlife program.
The natural preserve evolved from the school’s ongoing effort to convert its non-athletic turf to areas of sustainable vegetation, according to director of facilities Ed Bennett. About two years ago, he said, the school made the decision to use pesticides or herbicides as sparingly as possible while transforming the lawn areas to a drought-tolerant environment.
