Portions of project draw scrutiny

The latest proposal for developing the property at 1202 E. Ojai Ave. was given a concept review by the Ojai Planning Commission Wednesday. Though the commissioners recognized positive aspects of the project, they fell short of stating their approval outright.

Lead architect Marc Whitman and landscape designer Bill Mellett presented the basic concept for a brew pub-restaurant with an adjoining 40-unit hotel to be built on the site of the former Ojai Valley Bowl.

Based on a desert-oasis theme, Whitman said, the new complex would include a series of interconnecting courtyards and gardens, along with a swimming pool and an area for family-oriented games. The pool, game zone, restaurant and pub would all be available for local use as well as that of the hotel guests, Mellett said.
