Medical marijuana effort gets federal help

Following lobbying from medical cannabis groups, including Americans for Safe Access (ASA), Congresswoman Julia Brownley has signed on as a co-sponsor of the Compassionate Access, Research, Expansion and Respect States Act (CARERS), aimed at modifying federal law in regards to medical cannabis.

With medical cannabis still listed as a Schedule 1 drug with the federal Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) veterans worry that if they use medical cannabis — which has been found to be helpful in the treatment of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), a leading cause of suicide among veterans — they may lose federal benefits.
