Ojai’s youth girls’ all-star team, the Rebels, took third place last weekend in the Battle at the Beach Basketball Tournament. The local girls encountered some stiff competition, but still managed to grind their way to a third-place finish.
“When the girls realized they would be playing year-round club traveling teams they knew
they had their work cut out for them. The teams they played had over 20 team members or more in some cases,” said head coach Mike Sedlack. The Rebels showed up with just six girls on the roster, giving them little backup or options of sitting out for any reason.
“We were faced with teams rotating every quarter with new, fresh players. The other teams had no worries about playing rough or committing fouls, but we had to be cautious,” added Sedlack.
After dropping their first two games of the tournament, the local all-stars hit their stride in the third game and cruised to a 20-point victory. In their fourth game, the Rebels rolled their opponent by 25 points to even their record at 2-2 for the tournament.
“We were the smallest team with probably the least experience but the girls were unbeatable by the end of this tournament. Not bad for a bunch of Ojai country girls. Look out next year.”
