Insurance forcing longtime Ojai craft event to peddle off into the sunset

It was a familiar sight to anyone who’s lived in Ojai during the past 40 years or so: tables and tents set up in and around the Chaparral High School Auditorium, with vendors selling everything from batik scarves to geodes to old Kodak box cameras. But as of September, the Ojai Peddler’s Fair was a thing of the past.

“The Peddler’s Fair is no longer functioning at Chaparral or any other outlet,” said Andy Cantwell, assistant supervisor of business and administrative services for the Ojai Unified School District (OUSD). The main reason, he said, is the county insurance provider’s updated coverage, requiring individual vendors to carry their own liability insurance.
