Get your granny flat OK’d: City to offer revised amnesty program for second units

Despite the recent shrinking population of the city of Ojai, the state of California requires all communities to prove to the state that they can accommodate their “fair share” of California’s population growth through the Housing Element process. As part of this process, Ojai’s city staff began developing a program to show the state that additional affordable housing is available in Ojai in the form of unpermitted granny flats. The city’s effort, called the Second Unit Compliance Program, will ensure these types of units are “up to code” for the health and safety of tenants — and are counted by the state.
