Forget the lions, tigers and bears — we’ve got tarantula hawks

08042015 OVLC spider wasp1
Ojai Valley Land Conservancy stewardship director Rick Bisaccia spotted this nightmarish scene on Wills Canyon Trail earlier this week. A tarantual hawk, also known as a spider wasp, stings a tarantula, paralyzing it. The huge wasp will lay its eggs on the tarantula, and once they hatch, the wasp larvae will feed on the still-living arachnid until they mature and fly away.
