Ojai will soon have a new city attorney; city staff announced May 15 that the City Council has selected Matthew Summers to replace former Ojai city attorney Joseph Fletcher, who announced his resignation last November. Fletcher had served Ojai as a contract attorney since 2011, and Summers has served as interim assistant attorney for Ojai since Fletcher’s resignation last February.
What exactly are the responsibilities of someone serving as city attorney? According to the city’s website, “The city attorney is appointed by the City Council to provide legal assistance to the council and city. He writes all city ordinances (which become law), and provides legal assistance on a host of legal issues for the city of Ojai.”
