How does a city government largely reliant on tourism regulate the burgeoning short-term vacation rental market, balancing demand with residents’ needs? For now, at least, it doesn’t; Ojai City Council voted last week to extend a moratorium on issuing conditional use permits (C.U.P.s) for vacation rentals, like those found on Airbnb.com, pending more community input.
According to Ojai city staff, local regulations have not kept pace with the likes of Airbnb.com, and the only official process in place for local homeowners or business owners seeking this type of property use is to apply for a C.U.P. through the Ojai Planning Commission.
