As a very dry rainy season passes, the prospect of recycling some household wastewater is gaining appeal for many Ojai Valley residents. And the good news is that it's getting easier to do so. Ventura County has taken steps toward a more accessible permitting process, and one environmental group is asking local governments to do the same.
"Graywater" is the term generally used for all household wastewater this side of whatever's getting flushed down the toilet. The water from washing machines, showers, bathtubs and sinks can be included in the category. It's just a little less clean than drinking water, and it can be rather nutritious for ornamental plants, according to Deborah Pendrey. "The nutrients in graywater can be fairly beneficial for gardens," she observed.
