Amid reports that aquifers across California are at risk of contamination from injected oil field waste, local residents spoke out at a Feb. 10 hearing on the statewide Draft Environmental Impact Report (DEIR) for well stimulation processes.
The hearing in Ventura was held as state oil and gas regulators responded to an ongoing investigation by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The EPA has found that oil field waste disposal injection wells have been permitted to operate over aquifers, which should have been protected from such activity.
