Kepler-444 hosts five Earth-sized planets in very compact orbits. A team that included Ojai teacher Jon Swift detected the planets from the dimming that occurs when they transit the disc of their parent star, as shown in this artist's conception. (Artist rendering by Tiago Campante/Peter Devine)

Some of the oldest-known planets in our galaxy were recently discovered, and an Ojai teacher, Jon Swift, was part of the team that made the discovery. The properties of these planets suggest the potential for life to have begun in the far reaches of space, billions of years before life here on Earth.
